Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Schwab & Diana Yorgan
For nearly two decades, Bob Schwab and Diana Yorgan have been living their commitment to Habitat for Humanity, embodying the spirit of volunteerism across multiple states and roles. Their journey began in Michigan, where they first picked up hammers for a Habitat build while visiting for an engineering conference. Back home in California they continued volunteering with Habitat East Bay and, most recently, Solano-Napa Habitat for Humanity (SNHfH). “We started volunteering because it just felt right to give back,” Diana shared. “Habitat offered us a way to make a real impact.”
Their connection to SNHfH is multifaceted and deeply rooted. Bob initially became involved when Habitat began renting a portion of the building he owns in Fairfield for their ReStore 12 years ago. Over time, the ReStore expanded to occupy the entire space, thanks in part to Bob’s guidance and support. Bob also served on the Habitat board for several years before transitioning to hands-on volunteering alongside Diana at the ReStore. “The ReStore is a wonderful way to stay active and give back, especially as we’ve gotten older,” Diana said. “It’s fun, fulfilling, and not as physically demanding as construction.”
Every Tuesday, Bob and Diana dedicate their time to the ReStore, where they clean, price, and organize items for sale. “At my age, I’ve found a whole new career in merchandising,” Bob joked. “I manage the tools and lighting sections, and it’s been surprisingly enjoyable!” Their enthusiasm is infectious, creating a welcoming environment for both customers and fellow volunteers. “Volunteering at the ReStore isn’t just about the work; it’s about the relationships we’ve built,” Diana added. “We’ve made lifelong friends here.”
The Schwabs’ dedication is a family affair. Their son, Rich Schwab, contributes his expertise by supporting ReStore’s marketing efforts. Bob proudly highlighted Rich’s work: “As someone who worked in marketing myself, I’m blown away by the detailed plans he’s created. He’s really elevated ReStore’s presence and impact.”
Bob and Diana’s message to potential volunteers is simple: get involved. Whether through the ReStore or on a build site, there are countless ways to make a difference. “Volunteering is good for the soul,” Diana said. “It’s fulfilling, uplifting, and a way to give back while connecting with wonderful people.”
“Bob and Diana are cherished members of our ReStore family,” said Lynn Aldersley, ReStore Manager. “Serving as both landlords and dedicated volunteers, they actively contribute their time and energy to support our mission, always with joy and enthusiasm. It’s a great day at ReStore when the Schwabs are in the house!”
