Elodia and Jose Hernandez

The Hernandez family lives on Voorhees Circle in St. Helena and helped build their home in 1998 when they were one of 10 families selected to participate in the Marietta Self-Help Townhomes Project.  They contributed hundreds of hours of labor to help build the townhomes.  Last year, Elodia suffered a stroke and wasn’t able to climb the stairs to use the bathroom and bedroom on the second floor.  Since that time, she had been sleeping in the living room.  With financial assistance from The Gasser Foundation, a CDBG Grant from Napa County and other generous donations from local St. Helena residents, a chairlift was installed to allow easy access to the second floor and volunteers modified the bathroom making it handicapped-accessible.  At a celebration marking the end of the project, the homeowners and their children expressed their gratitude and appreciation that Elodia now has full use of her home once again.
